Skill Set 3: Communicating Verbally

Verbal communication is a formal term for talking and listening. Some people are good talkers and some are good listeners, but you need to be good at both. Good verbal communication is necessary in order to arrive at a mutual understanding. Talking in an informal conversation is very different from speaking to groups.

The skills in this Skill Set are important because they function as building blocks for Skill Set 5, Working Directly With People and Skill Set 6, Influencing Others. These three Skill Sets complement each other, but they can also be developed independently. If you are skilled at establishing trust and cooperating with others, you will have an easier time communicating verbally. Similarly, you will find it much easier to persuade other people to adopt your ideas if you can effectively communicate your ideas with others in one-on-one conversations and presentations.

People who consider themselves shy may find practicing these skills intimidating at first. However, overcoming those fears will pay off in the long run. People who communicate well will find that it is much easier to advance in the workplace and achieve both short and long-term goals when they present their ideas clearly and establish strong relationships with others.
